2025 Refrigerant Changes: How Will It Affect HVAC Prices?

What Is Changing?

Like Everything else, change is inevitable in air conditioning & refrigeration. One such imminent change is the transition from R-410A to R-454B refrigerants, which is expected to have a significant impact on residential customers.

Why Is The Refrigerant Change Happening?

The shift from R-410A to R454B is primarily driven by environmental concerns.  While effective as a refrigerant, R-410A has a higher Global Warming Potential (GWP), contributing to climate change. As countries around the world seek to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions, transitioning to refrigerants with lower GWP's has become a priority for our government agencies.

Equipment Compatibility?

According to information from multiple manufacturers, existing air conditioning & heat pump equipment designed for R-410A will not be compatible with R-454B components.  Customers looking to upgrade or replace their heating & cooling systems may need to invest in new components that are compatible with the new refrigerant once all existing R-410A equipment is depleted.

How Will The Pricing Of Heating & Cooling Systems Be Affected?

The shift to R-454B will impact all equipment manufacturers as they will have to retool their assembley lines, design new models, & add leak detector sensors. Due to this changes, we have been told to expect a 20-30% increase in the cost of equipment.

What about My Existing Air Conditioner or Heat Pump?

R-410A refrigerant & repair parts will still be available, so we will able to keep systems running. Parts for units or systems under warranty should be available for the life of the manufacturer's warranty.  That's at least until 2034.

Consumer Planning & Options!

This changes have come on rapidly, & the manufacturers & contractors are still catching up.  The impact & cost of this changes will be felt when you replace your exisiting air conditioner or heat pump system. If you have an outdoor unit that is 10 years old or older, want to save money, & be proactive. You may want to consider replacing your exisiting system with a new R-410A system while the equipment is still available.

What Is Air Service Professionals Doing To Help Customers?

We have been working with our American Standard & Mitsubishi Distributors ordering the largest stocking order of new R-410A equipment in our company's history.  We are filling our warehouse to its maxium capacity. We are hoping to have enough new R-410A equipment to provide our customers for the first two quarters of 2025. Once our inventory of R-410A equipment is depleted, we will be forced to purchase the more expensive R-454B equipment.

Finial Conclusions & Facts!

R-454B equipment will cost 20-30% more to be installed in your home!

R-410A equipment will be more cost effective to be installed in your home!
